Whether you’re a young adult ready to start saving for retirement, a 50-something ready to pay off your debts or a young marries couple just starting your own family, sustainable savings and accessible investments are two essential things.
PiggyVest aims to help you do both of those things while guiding you through the process! Everyone finds their own unique use for the app, and that, we think is the beauty of PiggyVest.
Every month, we shine a spotlight on one saver (or group of savers), asking them questions about their savings and investment culture and how the product is specifically helping them shape how they spend and save for future responsibilities.
This month, we have our savers, a young couple using the platform in a way that is incredibly unique to them.
So, here we go, Adah and Kristie Alubo.
—
Introduce yourself: What is your name and what do you do?
I am Adah Alubo, I work in the ICT directorate of the university of Jos. I am also the convener of OLIHI, it’s a marketplace event in Jos. My wife’s name is Kristie, she works at the family owned school in an administrative and management role. She also has a clothing store where they sell fabric and mostly ladies’ clothes and shoes.
When did you start saving on Piggyvest?
Not sure I can remember but it must have been 2017, maybe the year before. Krisite started in 2018 and I believe I introduced her to it.
Apart from saving, do you also invest and in what?
Investing? On or off the app? We have a farm, pigs, goats, rabbits and fishes, also breed dogs. Still finding our feet around it. On the app, I try to invest in things that have close to 20% ROI per annum, mostly agricultural investments
What do you spend most of your income on?
Most of the family’s income is spent on bills, the businesses and we are also building our own place so…
What would you like to stop spending money on?
Personally, I wish I could go without having to pay for electricity and DSTV, it’s just upsetting. Other than that, maybe eating out and internet.
If money wasn’t a concern, what would your careers be in?
I like to grill, have people over and share drinks, memories and just tell tales and share dreams and ideas. If I wasn’t worried about income and the hours, I would probably have a BBQ spot. Kristie loves what she does because she enjoys business.
Do you enjoy travelling and where is your dream vacation destination?
Yep traveling is fun, we wanted to do a trip July, we are hoping COVID thing would be over by then. Dream vacation destination would be hopping around Europe for like 30 days.
What Piggyvest feature is your favourite?
I think my current favourite is target savings, just because I can do small amounts daily, to meet a goal. It used to be autosave. Kristie prefers Safelock, she likes the interest rate and not being able to dip into her savings
How do you budget your income?
To be honest, I just wing it. If that month I have had extra earnings maybe from the farm or the marketplace event, then I could make more savings in the app or invest some more in the farm.
Has PiggyVest helped you save?
Yes, very much so. Because I currently save small amounts to meet a goal, it seems easier to put money together that I may have spent. And for Kristie, the excitement is in waiting for her safelock day.
Is there any specific thing you’ve used Piggyvest to achieve as a couple ?
I mentioned we are building. Started it before we got married, I was just saving, and my event was doing really well too, and I noticed I had money I was literally not using. So, I thought, I can actually start building a house and that’s the next big project we are working on. We also used our savings to change our phones in December. Currently, we are saving for our trip summer vacation as well.
Where did you have your honeymoon?
In our house o 😃
Do you have/have you created a savings account for kids?
No, we have not done that yet.
Do you have a joint savings account? If Yes, why? If no, why not?
No o, to be honest for me there’s no reason because what we are doing right now is working for us, and for her I think she likes to hide her money so that she can say give me money for fuel. 😃
Who do you think is better at saving? Husband or wife?
Kristie is better, I just mentioned she hides her money.
Were you able to save the monetary gifts from your wedding?
We did not save it, we got a gift for my dad who lost his phone on the wedding day, then invested the rest in her business and in mine.
Do you have any feedback for Piggyvest?
We like all the open houses you guys do, but we’re unhappy that like most big brand events, everything is centred in Lagos when you move towards the north it stops in Abuja. This leaves us feeling exempt. It would be nice if you did something small in Jos or Kaduna or Kano as well, these are big cities.
